How Cannabis Could Influence Appetite

Many people who smoke or ingest cannabis report feelings of hunger, also known as the “munchies.” This can cause a person to gain weight because cannabis is known to increase hunger, yet research also shows that cannabis can help a person lose weight.

While more research is being conducted, cannabis can influence one's appetite, although this will vary from one user to another and the amount of marijuana they consume.

Cannabis: Stimulating Brain Receptors

It is said that smoking or ingesting cannabis can increase a person’s appetite by stimulating cannabinoid receptors in the brain. These receptors will then release a hormone that increases food intake, which is why snacking tends to be part of the process. Cannabinoid receptors are naturally present in humans, and cannabinoids affect us by attaching to these receptors. Cannabinoids are compounds in the cannabis plant, including cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Research also suggests that ghrelin, an appetite-stimulating hormone, can be released after smoking or ingesting cannabis.

Others believe that cannabis can help with weight loss, although research only shows that there may be a link between cannabis use and lower body weight, which has yet to be proven. Cannabis is linked to lower rates of obesity because it can increase activity levels in some people and may lower alcohol consumption. It can also affect one's metabolism and may help with sleep issues, improving one’s appetite. As of today, however, studies cannot yet prove why this link exists, so cannabis should not be viewed as a treatment for obesity.

What is THC?

THC is the compound that produces a high, which may trigger hunger in some people, although CBD can counteract some of these effects, which can help lessen the appetite-stimulating effects of cannabis. Again, no direct studies prove a definitive link between CBD and weight loss. However, some evidence points to a relationship between CBD and appetite suppression. Certain studies suggest that specific cannabinoid receptor antagonists can help control appetite and obesity, and while BCD does not block these receptors, it can encourage other molecules to do so.

Other studies show a link between overactive CB receptors, obesity, and metabolic disorders. As CBD likely plays a role in blocking CB1 receptors, it may help reduce obesity, although there are limited studies regarding this topic, and there are varying views as many studies point towards increased appetite. So, while this information is interesting, scientists need to conduct more research to determine the role of cannabis in weight loss or weight gain.
